“I understand that this model FGRC0844U1 is the current model and that FGRC0844S1 is the older model. Has anything really changed or been improved on between these two units? Is the newer model more reliable? have newer features? Quieter?”

Hi Bluefoot! Thank you for your inquiry. We were able to see that the design and size between these two models are different. Your air conditioner also may make many sounds, such as high pitched chatter, vibration, ping, swishing, sound of rushing air, gurgle or hissing; which are a part of the normal operations. Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I don’t know about the older model but this one is not quiet by any means. Eco setting is nice for efficiency but it’s way too loud as it shuts off and on at night. I’m typically a heavy sleeper but this definitely wakes me up. It would be nice if it was quieter but I just leave it on Cool at night and it’s loud operation noise just becomes white noise as I sleep.
