The 235 will give you more running metrics such as your VO2. The vivoactive 3 will offer more sport profiles for other activities. You can also get the 3 with music and the 235 does not offer that or the ability to pay with your watch like you can with the vivoactive 3.

Some of the main differences are the Forerunner 235 uses an all button interface, is designed with specific running features in mind, and offers Garmin's first generation optical heart rate sensors. The vivoactive 3 has a touchscreen interface, basic running features along with many other activity profiles, the second generation optical heart rate sensor, and Garmin Pay which is the ability to load compatible credit/debit cards to the watch for wireless payments.
