While I do carry a phone, I don’t sync the Forerunner to it. I sync the ride data once I get back home using the Garmin Connect app on an iPad. I get the same data I get in MapMyRide or Strava including maps of where I rode. Could leave the phone at home but I carry it “just in case.” I also let the Forerunner sync to my Edge bike computer so I can see heart rate on my handlebars. Hope this helps.

The device will track your data under the correct activity profile without a phone.  However, without your phone you wouldn't get any notifications.
