Yes, it works without service. But to look back at fitness stats you need service to transfer data from your watch to your phone for viewing.

Yes works and functions wonderfully even with no cell connection it will update with your device when cell connection is reestablished, it also uses location via GPS on satellite not Cell, therefore you must be outdoors to utilize the GPS mode but you can use it to save points you find in the wilderness and later name them on your app so you can quickly re navigate an area that can be immense in size and confusion thanks to the trusty Garmin
