Do you have to use a app or can u use this all by itself? . null

It needs to be initially set up via an app but works solo just fine after that. You won't be able to review past performance on the device but real time it works great.

The vivofit jr. does have a basic mode that would allow the device to track steps, but to take advantage of all the features it is recommend that the device is paired with the vivofit jr. app on the parent/guardian's compatible smartphone.

You'll need to have the app on your smartphone or tablet in order to use all of the available features.
