GPS works on the golf course with the phone in my bag. It needs the phone nearby when identifying your golf course and downloading the course. As far as i can determine, it keeps one course on board so you only need to have the phone nearby when going to another course.

Yes, the vívoactive has it's own standalone GPS chip set, it doesn't use a phone to acquire signal. The connection to the phone is used for uploading a completed activity to the Garmin Connect app.
