You do not have to have a phone it will save information and you can download whenever but you can see activity on the band anytime.

This is a fairly larger bracelet than a 9 year old might need. There are smaller bands you can get for it. It connects via Bluetooth to any phone or tablet. It connects with an app and communicates with it via Bluetooth.
