We strongly recommend that an extension cord not be used with a microwave due to the potential safety hazards under certain conditions. The microwave should be plugged into its own properly grounded, dedicated electrical outlet to prevent the flickering of the lights, blowing of a fuse or tripping of a circuit breaker. The microwave cord is three to five feet long (depending on model).
Extension cords may be used if the following conditions are met:
The extension cord must be a three-wire grounding type appliance cord that has an Underwriters Laboratory approval (UL), and that it mentions the current it can handle. The extension cords are usually marked 15 or 20 amps.
The marked electrical rating of the extension cord should be at least as great as the electrical rating of the microwave.

Some microwave models have a built-in 5-minute internal timer as a safety feature preventing the microwave from cooking without food inside, since doing so can cause the unit to overheat. If food is placed into the cavity before selecting a cooking sequence, opening and closing the door activates the switch, initiating the 5-minute internal timer. The door latch switch must be opened and closed before hitting “START,” which signals the unit that food has been placed inside. The "FOOD" or "Insert Food" message on the display means the microwave thinks food has not been added yet.
