Today most new over the range microwaves are convertible to recirculating or the standard external venting. When setup for external venting the internal vent system discharges against a duct extending from the microwave top or rear to the outside air either through the roof, or to an eave vent. When set up for recirculating the air recirculates through a charcoal filter and comes out the bottom of the microwave back into the room. The conversion from exterior venting to recirculating is a very easy process and the procedure is described in the installation manual.
