Hi Laura- Thanks for viewing! The height of the grates are designed to provide optimal heating while also maintaining burner efficiency and safety. This cooktop is equipped with a 15,000 BTU Power Boil burner (Left Front) that delivers high heat for fast boiling and a 5,000 BTU Precise Simmer Burner (Left Rear) so delicate items don't burn with low, even heat. Lasted 12 years and only replaced because the ignitor stopped working. This new one has nicer knobs and the grate is a different design, but same spacing as the old one. I'm very pleased with my purchase. Hope this helps....
