Hi Drafty- The range hood is not designed for ceiling installation in an island. We also offer GE Profile™ Series 36" Island Hood PV977NSS. Check out the Installation Instructions for details: http://products.geappliances.com/MarketingObjectRetrieval/Dispatcher?RequestType=PDF&Name=49-80550-4.pdf - Thanks for considering GE! SUE@GEA

There are “punch outs “ on the top and on the fourth side to attach the venting duct that will lead out of your home. It is finished with a taper and a bevel on three sides, not evenly around the unit, so it would not be appropriate for an island range unit. You might want to look at a stove with a “down draft” duct if you do not like the idea of a hood hanging from the ceiling. Some of the more expensive model island range tops have a venting system that draws vapors and fumes to the back and down away from the range. They are also filtered to absorb grease residue.
