Yes it will stop itself when the load is badly unbalanced.

This new system can quickly recognize out of balance loads and adjust spin patterns to reduce vibration. The washer tubs move freely within our exclusive auto balance suspension system. It is a rod and spring floating suspension, designed to withstand extensive out of balance situations without the need for an "out of balance" switch. It will not beep or shut off. The balance ring allows smooth operation and prevents the washer from knocking or walking. The balance ring is an enclosed plastic container that is partially filled with a salt water solution. The two halves of the balance ring are welded together to form a permanent seal. It is attached to the inner clothes basket and allows the basket to spin smoothly if an uneven load creates an out-of-balance situation. Also, starting in 2015, GE Appliances top load washers are using an advanced fill algorithm enabled by the electronic or rotary-electronic (knob) controls to fill the washer based on time.
