Hi EML - Thanks for considering GE Model # GFW850SSNWW! We have good news. The wash cycle can be paused after starting to allow for extra items to be added. Press Start/Pause and wait until the door is unlatched. The washer may take up to 30 seconds to unlock the door after pressing Start/Pause, depending on the machine conditions. Do not try to force open the door when it is locked. After the door unlocks, open gently. Add items, close the door and press Start/Pause to restart. Also, if it is desired to manually add detergent for a load, that detergent will need to be added directly to the basket, and the SMART DISPENSE set to off for that particular load. The smart dispense feature can be disabled by pressing the SMART DISPENSE pad until off is selected. Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes to both. There is a Pause button to push, then you have to wait about 30 sec for the door to unlock and then you can add clothes. The Detergent dispensing system can be bypassed by pressing a button. You will have to do this for each load that you want it bypassed. I was concerned that it would use too much soap, but it uses less than I would and my clothes come out very clean.
