Hi babyscout - Thanks for considering GE Profile Model PVM9179SKSS! Outside venting is preferable. If the model is not vented to the outside, the air will be recirculated through a disposable charcoal filter (included) that helps remove smoke and odors. The charcoal filter cannot be cleaned. It must be replaced when it is noticeably dirty or discolored (usually after 6 to 12 months, depending on usage). Also, when replacing an over-the-range microwave, the mounting bracket included with the new microwave should be used since the mounting bracket is specific to each model.
