• Hello ML - this is Nancy at GE Appliances and I am happy to help you. Yes, the washing machine can be opened after the cycle has started. If the lid is opened during the cycle so you can add a piece of clothing, the cycle will pause and the Status lights will blink. To resume the cycle, close the lid and press the Start pad.
