I am pretty sure that depends on the individual machine in question as it will vary from model to model. They are fairly transparent about the condition of the product in my experience. Consider going with an open box model as those are similar in price and are viewed as a new machine from Apple's point of view and include the same warranty and ability to enroll in AppleCare as one that is purchased brand new! Also, there are great 3rd party retailers such as Back Market who specialize in refurbished MacBook models and they stand behind their products and offer fairly decent warranties and the option for extended upgraded protection as well, similar to AppleCare.
