Macbook version doesn't mater. As long as it will run Chrome browser you can run cast a tab from the chrome browser. If your looking to cast the desktop or even other apps, an apple TV might be a better option for a mac.

You will need to download the Google Chrome Browser to your computer and then add the chromecast extension. You will only be able to stream content from your browser, but there are plenty of Chrome extensions available that will allow you to stream movies and other media.
