Yes, you will use data with the app because you are either reviewing recorded footage from the Website of the company or you are streaming live data from the camera (if you are in "Live" mode). Honestly, though, if all you are doing is looking when you've received a notification of motion, you're not going to use much data at all. I usually check in on the camera four or five times a day, and I am seeing only a little bump in my average data usage since I installed the camera. Now, if you were to keep the app open and run in Live mode for hours at a time, you would definitely chew up data, but that would be an unusual use of the camera in some extraordinary situation.
