“This is a Google owned company. I use Google extensively including 2TB of google drive. There is no reason why I would need to pay "extra" to record video, since I should be able to record directly to my Google drive. What is up with this?”

That's just their setup for now, unfortunately. Do keep in mind that Nest Aware includes more than just recording features, such as face detection and package detection.
