Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.NEST website explains pretty good but steam is water vapor with negligible particle density and smoke is from burning item and will contain denser particles within hence the smut on your walls after a fire if they are still standing.

I have been cooking and opened up big pots with lots of steam coming out and nothing happened, but the second a pan was left on that started to smoke (in my house about 1x every other day), the alarm has given a verbal warning

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.We have had no issues yet . Our old alarm would go off every time our granddaughter showered, Nest has not gone off. Manual says it could go off with steam but not very likely. Ours works great!
