Once set up correctly the device operates as an advance alarm monitor and lighting device for emergencies and non-emergencies. This device will speak, not chirp or blare sound, should the device detect a problem and inform you what area of your home the problem is located. What type of problem has been detected. Unfortunately, the only drawback to the protect is the challenges of overcoming wife connectivity issues. The only alert an owner will receive should wifi connectivity be lost is thru email.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Without Internet it wouldn't be able to notify you if you were out, but the mesh network between units is not reliant on WiFi. It will function like a normal interconnected smoke alarm.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.What I know is that it has a 10 year battery which is standard with most of the other smoke detectors/carbon monoxide detectors. It works regardless it you have wifi or not. Without wifi then you cannot monitor the device through your smartphone or computer through the Nest app so that you can check the history, do a check up etc. So your still protected regardless of wifi, its just a standard ceiling smoke/carbon monoxide detector which will sound the alarm if there is an emergency.
