The wired model of the detector , of course, has batteries as a power source so the detectors would still work in the event of a power outage. Nobody in their right mind would purchase a detector tha was powered and did not have battery backup. Many fires start in wiring that could cause a power loss before the alarm activates, and the alarms would be worthless when needed. The Nest WIRED detectors use lithium batteries that would probably last 7-10 years before needing replacement because the detectors are electrically powered and the lithium backup batteries have hardly any drain on their power. The battery models do drain the batteries as tests and simply being on 24/7 are a constant drain. I would estimate replacement of battery time as approximately 1 and 1/2 to 2 and 1/2 years as they are lithium and 6 in number.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. There are two versions, AC powered and Battery powered. The multi-pack actually includes 3 battery versions with three AC adapters, where the single ones give you a choice or AC OR battery. The battery version uses and ships with lithium AA batteries. I've had one in service for nearly 3 years, and another one for about 2 years, and havent had to change the batteries yet. They estimate 5 years + for the battery version.
