Will gen 1 and gen 2 work together null

I have never had a problem with any Nest products working together regardless of the generation.

Absolutely. Nest Protects connect wirelessly using a Nest-developed protocol called Weave that lets Nest Protects communicate with one another safely and securely without an active Wi-Fi connection. Keep in mind that it can only connect to Nest Protect devices (1st Gen and 2nd Gen).
