It is basically a digital thermometer that will send that information to your nest. Normally, your nest is only reading the temp from the area directly around the unit. This will "trick" the system in reading and adjusting to the temp in a different area of the home. In my home, my bedroom is the hottest and around the nest it is always 10° cooler. The nest is set to cool after 75° according to my bedroom and not the area around the unit, allowing the hvac to stay on longer to regulate that area.

When you set the sensor as your main temperature sensor, your Nest thermostat kicks in to heat or cool based on the temperature reading of the sensor. If your house doesn't have a zoned HVAC system, your Nest thermostat will heat or cool the entire house.
