“I'm uder the impression that the nest thermostats are all battery powered but you still wire them up where the thermostat basically charges itself. Are all nest thermostats this way where you can wire them to constantly charge the battery?”

• They will work on battery but connecting a 24 volt common is the best.

• In most cases, Nest thermostats can charge their built-in battery using your system’s heating and cooling wires. But, when your heating and cooling wires are not able to deliver the needed power for your Nest thermostat, you may need to connect a common or C wire. Also, only the Nest Thermostat (2020) has two 1.5 Volt AAA alkaline batteries which will likely only be in use when there’s a power loss to the thermostat.
