“If I buy the Verizon version (not unlocked) and "activate today", are there any fees from the Verizon side, or will it essentially work the same way an unlocked phone with my sim card would?”

I did have a fee....since I am a Verizon user, the fees may be different for someone who is not. Give them a call...they will clarify
