“i have an ATT gateway in our house and need to extend my wifi in another room. i know i can use this mesh device; but how many do i need? it seems i at least need 2 since one has to be connected my gateway at first and the second at minimum to extend WIFI”

How many points you need may depend on the distance you want to cover. We recommend placing the points no more than 2 rooms away from each other.
