It has a very good microphone, but i would take it out of the water proof case to pick up the sound better.

WIth the case on it you wont be able to hear a thing. (learn from my mistakes). So without the case yeah its got some solid audio. The only downside is if you're outside and there is wind. It could mess with the audio.

Unfortunately nobody told me this, but when i went to pearl harbor in Hawaii, i had the case that came with it attached to the camera. That made it difficult to hear the tour guide when i replayed it. I bought a skeleton housing case that didnt block the microphone and that helped alot! Just keep in mind that if you're using it outside, with the skeleton housing, and its windy, you might get lots of wind noises when you replay it! Now i did record family vacation videos using the case it came with, and it worked really good. It depends in the environment you're in. Hope this helped a lil!

Of course, with the water proof housing you will get super muffled sound, but with a skeleton housing that will not be a bother. I find the sound quality clear without any distortions (depending on the activity).
