• The GoPro remote is waterproof. We could never get ours to work under the water. Works fine on top of the water.

• The Smart Remote is waterproof, so you can definitely wear it while swimming. One thing to consider though is that the connection between the remote and the GoPro is done by a wifi signal. Wifi does not travel well through water, so triggering a photo while the GoPro and/or the Smart Remote are underwater most likely would not work once you get too far under the surface.
