Do you need the remote to take a picture with the GoPole? Or does the GoPro have a timer on it that you can set for 10 seconds and get ready for the picture.

GoPro has a setting where you can take pictures while recording (every certain amount of seconds) that you could use. You can also grab a still from video that you are shooting.

You can use the remote control and GoPole to take a selfie.
Or you can use the burst mode to take pictures depending on what you are shutting.
Or you can use the time lapse mode to choose the correct picture.

No you don't but taking the pictures will be difficult as you need to press the button. I have a pole that has a place built in for the remote and it is really great.

You do not need the remote. The camera has multiple timer settings to choose from. you can also download the app and control your camera via wifi.

No, Just scroll through the menu til you see the camera Icon and your ready to shout still pic's. Having a remote makes it simple to do what your trying to do. I don't think you can delay the shutter from going off.

The GoPros are VIDEO cameras that do have an option to take pictures - The main purpose of the unit is VIDEO. With that said. there is no timer function like normal picture cameras have, if this is what you want to do, you will need to buy the remote, Be sure to purchase the correct remote as most of the older models do not have remotes for them.
