Yes it only plays mono audio out of the google home. The google home max has some stereo effect. You can also use multiple google home max's in a stereo mode.

Rumour has it we'll be able to use google home and google home mini's in a stereo array like the max, but that feature hasn't been turned on yet--and may never be.

Yes, but if you place it centrally along wall or in corner sound fills the room surprisingly well. Definitely not theater or concert quality but very good for size. Does tend towards boomy bass unless your app has an equalizer setting.
