How close do you need to be to the unit and do you need to see it? null

Unit will response from several feet away. It even answers the TV Ad about the Google Home. It responds to some voices better than others

You have to be close enough for it to hear your voice clearly. You do not need to see it at all. I am able to be down the hall and it is able to hear me. If you have music on or tv it will be harder to hear your voice.

You do not need to see it when i first bought it i hid it behind my couch to mess with my son. It really does not look bad out in the open, I can be in the other room (15 ft away) on the other side of the wall and it works as long as the TV is not up too loud.
