“Should the upper drain plug be in the open or closed position?”

• Hi, The upper drain plug should be in the closed position unless you are using this device strictly as a dehumidifier. If so, then you'll want to remove the upper drain plug and attach a hose for continuous drainage when the machine is solely running on this mode. • Drain plug should be closed when using. Plug is there to drain water that may have collected.
