The 4th wire could be for AC. If you don't have AC, don't use it.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. There is a hack where you can use four wires, (google it if needed), but the actual specs call for five wires, (Green, White, Yellow, Red, Common). There is a installed jumper wire across the Red to supply power to two terminals.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.3. Most old systems, especially hearing only analog systems only have 2 wires hooked up. But luckily the original installer used a bundled wire setup that had extra wires at both ends, so I hooked them to the G slot at both ends.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.4 wires the fourth supplies the low voltage 24 volts this is usually gotten from the board from the furnace where the other 3 wires are attached. You can also supply your own 24 volt transformer if not.sometimes the fourth wire is in the bundle going up to the old thermostat it just is not being used some thermostats use batteries .
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.4. Because it needs 24volts this is usually found on the board on the furnace some times the 4th wire is in the existing bundle cut short if you are lucky if not you have to supply 24 volts by separate transformer
