It comes with a filter cartridge, but it is made to be used with or without the cartridge. It also uses plain tap water.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.They supply you with a filter that I have not used. You can insert it or not. You're supposed to clean it once a week. I just clean it with a mixture of white vinegar and water and let it sit all day, but be sure to rinse well. I do it about once every 3 weeks even though it should be weekly. It's a pain in the neck really. It appears to pour lots of steam into the air, which is what I'm looking for, but I'm really ambivalent about this thing.
