Hey dave, thank you for your question! SmartWash+ will run fine with water and without shampoo. If the brushes stopped spinning it could mean the brush roll stall protection activated as a result of a jam or overheating. Turn your SmartWash+ off and check for jams or clogs. For best use, we recommend vacuuming prior to using your carpet cleaner.
