An SD card does not increase memory. With most Chromebooks you get the RAM (4GB, 8GB) that it came with. You can use an SD card to increase storage. It functions as an additional hard drive. Once you have an SD card installed it is a good practice to direct apps to save files to the SD card rather than the built-in storage. Keep the built-in storage for apps.
