Random Access Memory. Think of it as a work table. The larger the table, the more projects it can hold. You also need people working around the table-- the processors (CPU). The better the processor, the faster the projects on the table (RAM) can be completed. For every day tasks, like checking email or building a spreadsheet, you don't need a lot of RAM or a powerful processor.
