“1. Is this correct: in order to download google chrome, I need to take this out of S mode and I can’t get S mode back? 2. If out of S mode do I need to install something like Webroot for security? Will it slow the system down , annoyingly so?”

Yes you are correct you have to switch out of S mode but the computer comes with its own Microsoft anti virus so your good.
