I have a Deskjet hp 3630. And I only use the black cartridge a lot. Haven't bought a color cartridge in awhile. Mostly I print up things from online. Printer booklet should tell you about this. But I bet that you can only use the black cartridge and be fine. It's an HP!

You need to install both of them for the initial setup, but after that, you don't ever have to use the color cartridge or replace it when it runs dry. So after that, all you'll ever have to buy is the 63 or 63XL black.
