I didn't use my printer for awhile and now all of a sudden the drum has dried out and only prints partials words. Is that normal for this printer because I'm considering buying another as I liked the portability of it. null

Unfortunately, I have found that to be a common problem with my home printers. That has happened with four different home printers for me (not this one thus).

That really isn't normal. Inkjet printers definitely benefit from regular use (every couple weeks or so at the least). It sounds like you need to run a cleaning cycle through the maintenance options in the HP Smart app to return your printing to optimal quality.
