“Can versions of this printer after 3/29/21 still connect to computer without the smart app? Box says must use smart app now. I heard the firmware changed and direct connect may not be an option any longer.”

Thanks for your question. HP has decided to use the HP Smart app to set up most new printers. It is a simple process usually 1 minute or so with a smartphone/tablet or 3 - 5 minutes with a PC (to download the drivers). After setup, you can print to the printer with a standard USB printer cable.
