Searching for WiFi, using applications in the foreground, or having them running in the background can drain your battery, as well as system brightness settings and other computer settings that will alter how your computer's battery life lasts.

I have the recommended energy saving options on such as lower time limit on display off and sleep mode. It may also depend on the programs you are running and the performance vs power saving controls you have set.
