No you do not need a router. As long as your printer and Chromebook are both connected to your wifi they will be able to communicate. You will first set up the printer to your wifi, which is simple and comes with instructions. Then you use the HP app and you will be able to print from laptop and even your phone if it's on the wifi and has the HP app.
