Yes - the black is the only color you can replace by itself

However , these are so reasonably priced compared to our other printer (that was a HP7520) ....I dreaded buying ink for our old printer...even at Sams !!!
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.No, it doesn't really work that way. All the colors get used to print grayscale, and all the colors get used to create other colors. It's rare to run out of one and have plenty left on the others, since the yield is only 200-600 pages per cartridge. You can also use HP Instant Ink with this printer, in which case you don't pay for ink at all, just a low monthly fee to print a certain allotment. Plans start at just $2.99 for 50 pages/photos, which is $36/year (less than the cost of a single set of cartridges to print up to 600 8x10 photos or documents).
