You can sign up for an ink "subscription" based on the number of pages that you think you print each month, and you pay a flat rate each month. As long as your printer is online, the ink is sent automatically before the printer runs out. Doesn't matter whether you print a full color photo or a B&W document, I believe it counts as one page either way. You can adjust the "plan" to include more or less pages any time, if you don't guess the # you need correctly. My printer came with a free instant ink trial where I get 300 pages/month for free though, so that's nice - I have a couple months to figure out how many pages I typically print. They also send an pre-paid envelope to return the used cartridges to them for recycling. You can track you printing online as well, to see how many pages you have printed, and to adjust your plan as needed.

If there is a printing error and the printer starts spewing out blank pages, the ink charge is the same for the blank pages as a full 8 1:2" x 11" photo. I ended up stockpiling the ink because of printer problems. Also, as soon as your printer dies, cancel Instant Ink subscription or you will be charged indefinitely.
