The paper feed on top of the printer is for the scanner/copier. To print, you use the bottom drawer for fresh paper, and it is straight/horizontal. For single sheets (manual feed) you use the slot directly above the paper drawer, and it takes them one at a time. I have not tried the scanner/copier, so I don't know if it jams.

I've looked at printers from HP and other manufacturers, and every one I've seen is slanted somewhat. Some have a top cover that's horizontal, but the feed itself is slanted.
