“Does this printer print a mix document well? Meaning if a pdf file has both letter and legal mix throughout the document will the printer be able to automatically switch to the proper sized paper if an additional tray is provided?”

This printer does not have the capability to auto select mixed paper sizes. There are a few workarounds that you can do. 1) You can scale a document to fit page size as shown on this website 2) You can choose specific pages to print on from one tray, then you can repeat the same process for the other tray as shown on this webpage: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-color-laserjet-pro-mfp-m478-m479-series/19202514/model/19202521/document/c03324585 3) Some software, like Adobe Acrobat or Reader, will allow you print mixed page sizes as shown on this webpage, https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/print-mixed-page-sizes-acrobat.html
