• The ink cartridges are separate, so running out of color ink should not affect your ability to print in black ink. To be on the safe side, before printing your document, be sure to select the print in black and white option.

• I believe that you would have to replace the color ink 1st. However, if you don't need to print in color just print black only. This will override the empty color cartridges.
