When you connect via an ethernet cable, the printer has an IP address. The wireless is disabled because otherwise you would have 2 IP addresses. You cannot have 2 IP addresses on the printer. If the network that the printer is on also has WiFI you can use the mobile printing features of Air Print and HP Smart. Wifi direct would be disabled.
